Finally, the weather in North Carolina started to cool down a little bit, and the smell of pumpkin latte is all around us. It is about time to start thinking about updating your family portraits before it gets too cold.
We are here to help get you ready to rock out a fantastic photo session.
Choosing outfits for everyone is a great place to start, so read on for our tips on deciding what to wear for the fall photo session!
What To Wear For Fall Photo Shoot
It Doesn’t Have to Match – It Has to Go
Thinking about a color scheme for your session, I recommend starting with a basic color palette and going from there.
You can do this with a neutral base and a few pops of bright color, or pick a color and have everyone dress in shades of that color.
When it comes to picking out clothing, it’s usually easier to start with the girls outfits.
Let’s face it ladies – we are the picky ones!
Start with mom’s outfit, and then build a wardrobe around that style/color.
It’s All In The Details
Pay attention to the details: scarves, hats, shoes, jewelry, etc.
These all play a part in making your look come together.
However, keep in mind that sometimes, less is more.
You don’t want to overpower your look with accessories because the details can become distracting.
This is especially true when it comes to kids and babies.
All those giant bows are super cute, but are they taking away the focus from your sweet little princess?
(and don’t forget that shoes are an essential piece in finishing up your look)
Layer it Up
You can add visual interest with different layers and textures.
These are easy to add or take away, and can give the outfit a different feeling.
Layers can be: shirts, scarves, vests, jackets, necklaces, fingerless gloves, etc.
When we talk about textures, you can mix and match different clothing materials: tweeds, corduroy, crochet or lace, ribbons, ruffles, etc.
Texture can also be important when changing a photo to black and white!
Get Comfy
Probably the most essential advice I can give you: wear what you feel good in!
This is especially important because the way you feel about yourself in a particular outfit will come through in the images.
This is true for kids as well as for adults!
Make sure to wear clothes that are fitted but not too snug.
When clothing is a little too tight, it can show off bulges that you would rather keep hidden!
Plus, you don’t want to spend the photoshoot constantly pulling/tugging at your outfit.
